A comparison between a clean and dirty air filter from your Nissan in Mayfield Heights, OH

We all need the chilled air from the AC, as our beautiful Ohio summer days can sometimes get too hot to handle. ACs require regular AC maintenance to work effectively, as they can develop issues due to worn or damaged parts. As your Nissan dealer, we want to tell you about some problems that could occur and how we can repair them.

Clutch Not Engaging

The compressor pumps air and refrigerant through the AC system. It doesn’t run continuously but switches on and off at carefully timed intervals. The compressor is activated by the compressor clutch, and you can sometimes hear it make a slight clicking noise if it’s quiet inside the cabin. If your AC isn’t working and you don’t hear a click, the clutch has failed.

A clutch can fail due to age and normal wear and tear, but it can also fail for several other reasons. A blown fuse, damaged wiring, low refrigerant levels, or a failed AC thermostat can all prevent the clutch from working. A jammed compressor clutch pulley could also be the source of the problem. Our technicians will need to examine the compressor to determine the cause so we can fix it.

Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is essential for your AC, as it removes moisture from the external air once it enters the AC system. It’s also responsible for chilling the air before it blows into your cabin. Refrigerant operates in an airtight system, and it’s also not consumed by the AC as it works. This means that a low refrigerant level can only be caused by a leak.

The refrigerant will quickly evaporate if it leaks and is exposed to the atmosphere. Low refrigerant will prevent the AC from blowing cold air. We add a UV dye to the AC system, and our technicians use a specialized UV scanner to trace the refrigerant through the system until we find the hole. Once the hole is identified, we’ll permanently seal it.

Blocked Vents

Air enters the AC system through a vent positioned just below your windshield. As time passes, this vent can become blocked by leaves, dirt, or other debris. A blocked external vent restricts airflow into the AC, and without sufficient airflow, the AC won’t work effectively and may not work at all if the vent has a major blockage.

The vents that allow air into your cabin can also become blocked due to dirt and debris drawn in with the air. As time passes, debris can block airflow into the cabin, and you’ll usually hear rusting or rattling sounds from the cabin vents. We can fix either of these issues by clearing the vents, and your AC will work correctly again. If you have an AC problem, contact us today at Ken Ganley Nissan Mayfield in Mayfield Heights, OH.
